Official rate vs parallel market rate
Algeria has two exchange rates in everyday use. The official rate is set through the Bank of Algeria and is what banks apply to documented transfers, foreign trade operations and card payments. The parallel rate, known locally as the square rate, is the informal market rate around Square Port Saïd in Algiers and elsewhere, and it usually sits well above the official one. Both are shown here so you can see the real spread before changing money. Rates are indicative and move during the day, so confirm with your bank or exchange office before any transaction.
